Family Preservation
Supporting children, parents, siblings, and kin to remain connected wherever safe and appropriate.
Culture-led Indigenous family preservation
A warm, culturally grounded support pathway for Indigenous families, rooted in kinship, healing, whole-family wellness, and the belief that children thrive when connection remains strong.
A different path for Indigenous families
Niwahkomakanak Family Homes was created in response to a simple truth: many Indigenous families do not need separation. They need meaningful support that helps restore stability, strengthen parenting confidence, and keep children connected to family, culture, and community.
Our work is relational, respectful, and practical. We walk alongside parents, caregivers, kin, Nations, DFNAs, Indigenous agencies, and community partners to support families in a way that honours dignity and strengthens connection.
“Where it is safe and appropriate, support should help families stay connected — not pull them further apart.”
Whole-family wellness
Stability is built in the everyday places where families live: routines, meals, school mornings, appointments, emotional regulation, parenting confidence, and safe relationships.
Niwahkomakanak offers structured support that is steady, compassionate, and culturally grounded — helping families move from crisis toward calm, connection, and long-term belonging.
How we support families
Supporting children, parents, siblings, and kin to remain connected wherever safe and appropriate.
Honouring identity, tradition, Elders, ceremony, land-based learning, and connection to community.
Respectful coaching and practical support that strengthens routines, attachment, and everyday caregiving.
Supporting emotional wellness, daily structure, life skills, and the conditions families need to stabilize.
A supportive role
Niwahkomakanak supports family preservation without replacing the role of parents, caregivers, Nations, agencies, or statutory decision-makers. Our work is collaborative, family-centred, and grounded in respect.
We provide structured, culturally grounded support for families who would benefit from more intensive stabilization while remaining connected to the people, culture, and community that anchor them.
For Nations, DFNAs & community partners
Niwahkomakanak may be a meaningful pathway when a family needs more than periodic outreach and the shared goal is to strengthen safety, preserve connection, and support a family-centred path forward.
